Botany competition winners announced

May 15—JEFFERSON — The winners of the 23rd Ashtabula Botany Competition were recently announced at a luncheon in Jefferson.

Seven Ashtabula County high schools participated in the spring wildflower competition and each school received a donation for participating. The experienced teams attempted to identify 37 plants and novice teams 32 plants.

Ashtabula County Technical and Career Campus won the competition, identifying 26 plants corectly to earn a plaque, $150 for the school's botany material and individual copies of a book on flowers.

The second-place team was from Geneva High School and earned a plaque and $100 for school botany material. Lakeside High School earned third place, identifying 24 plants correctly to earn a school plaque and $75 for school botany material.

The tree competition winners from the fall of 2023 were A-Tech in first place, Pymatuning Valley in second and Jefferson third.

The event occurred earlier this spring and included a cooperative sponsorship by After School Discovery, Ashtabula County Master Gardeners and Gazette Newspapers.

A-Tech, Edgewood, Geneva, Grand River Academy, Lakeside, Pymatuning Valley and Saint John School participated in the event.

Numerous area businesses donated to the program and many of the Master gardeners offered their assistance working with the students during the competition held at Indian Trails Park in Plymouth Township.

The fall tree competition also took place at the park.
