  • She's held several senior positions at Boeing during her near-30 year career.

Boeing has appointed a long-serving third-generation employee to one of its top jobs as part of its leadership shakeup.

In his Monday announcement that he'd be stepping down as CEO of Boeing, Dave Calhoun also named Stephanie Pope as the new head of its commercial airplanes division.

She replaces Stan Deal as CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, which designs and builds planes such as the 777, 787 Dreamliner and the 737 family. It's based in Seattle, has factories in Renton and Everett, Washington state and employs 60,000 people worldwide.

In January Pope took up the newly created role of Boeing COO. She reported directly to Calhoun and oversaw BCA, Boeing's defense, space, and security division, and Boeing Global Services.

Calhoun said in his memo to staff on Monday: "With nearly 30 years of experience at Boeing, including her successful tenure leading our global services business, Stephanie knows our company inside and out and has a proven track record of superb leadership, including an innate talent for listening and responding to our people.

"Stephanie is a third-generation Boeing employee. She is deeply committed to our company, to our employees and to our shared future; and she is the perfect person to take on the leadership of our commercial airplanes business."

Pope's new role comes amid intense scrutiny of Boeing's safety record after the Alaska Airlines blowout that Calhoun described as a "watershed moment."

Pope started as a finance analyst at Boeing in 1994 and became CFO for the defense, space, and security division in 2012, according to her LinkedIn profile.

She was CEO of the global services division before becoming COO and has also held senior roles in other business units including commercial airplanes.

In her position on Boeing's executive council, Pope sponsors a business resource group dedicated to promoting gender diversity.

Pope was an Eisenhower Fellow in Brussels and Ireland in 2008 and has a bachelor's degree in accounting from Southwest Missouri State University and an MBA from Lindenwood University.
