Can Spencer Drango match his college success and boom for the Cleveland Browns? Or will Drango struggle to find his place, and bust?

Spencer Drango was the second offensive lineman (pick 168 overall), as well as the second Baylor player taken by the Cleveland Browns in the 2016 NFL draft. Drango was a four year starter at tackle for Baylor and dominated in his time there, earning unanimous All American honors in both 2014 and 2015. Drango is an intense and powerful offensive linemen who will likely be best suited to slide inside to the guard position at the NFL level. Will Drango be able to match his collegiate success and dominate in the NFL and boom for the Browns? Or will Drango’s deficiencies cause him to struggle to find his place and bust? Here is the Boom or bust for Spencer Drango.

Why Drango will Boom for the Browns

Intensity and a nasty streak is always welcomed when talking about offensive linemen and Drango has plenty of both. Drango loves the run game because it allows him to drive opponents off the ball and finish on top of them. Though he probably prefers to run block, Drango is an effective pass blocker as well. Drango possesses adequate quickness for a right tackle, but that quickness might be better utilized at guard in the NFL. Drango has prototypical strength and size for an NFL lineman as he posted thirty reps at 225 pounds during the combine, which was tops for his positional group.

Why Drango will Bust for the Browns

Drango played in the spread at Baylor, so it will be interesting to see how he adjusts to a pro style blocking scheme in the NFL. Even though Drango has the arm length to hold defenders at bay, he does not always take advantage of that length and shortens his arms when blocking, this allows defenders to gain an edge when engaging him. The Cleveland coaches will need to work with Drango on maximizing his physical talent. Drango will need to become less predictable with his moves in the NFL as defenders will be able to adjust their game to his and counter him with ease. Drango is best suited as a guard in the NFL, but he will need to show that he can adjust to the new position since he has only played at tackle in college.

Will Drango Boom or Bust?

I love this pick for the Browns. Drango is great value and will have an early opportunity for some playing time. The right guard and tackle spots are wide open. According to coach Hue Jackson Drango will get his first shot at right tackle. With rookie Shon Coleman, Mike Bowie, and Alvin Bailey the current competition for the tackle job, Drango could have an opportunity to steal the job if his competition falters. Should Drango lose out at the tackle spot, he will get another chance to crack the starting lineup in a competition with incumbent right guard John Greco and backup Austin Paztor.

Should Drango go 0 for 2 in his quest for a starting job this year, he will add much needed depth to an offensive line that has been exposed by injuries in the past. With injuries occurring so often along the offensive line in the NFL, Drango should be able to find some spot starts at the very least in 2016. Drango will have a great opportunity to become a full time starter once he has some time to adjust to the pro game. Drango’s flaws are fairly correctable and he possesses the mental toughness and physical skills that cannot be taught. I see Drango booming in the NFL and being the eventual starting right guard for the Cleveland Browns for years to come.
