Booker T. Washington principal to leave position

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — A beloved school principal at a Champaign elementary school is leaving the school.

Jaime Roundtree will be leaving Booker T. Washington STEM Academy, his lawyer Ron Langacker confirmed with WCIA Wednesday.

A spokesperson for the district said they could not confirm the resignation.

Roundtree has been working at the school as principal since July 2019. He has been working at the district for over 18 years, according to his LinkedIn page.

His announcement comes after his assistant principal Rebecca Ramey was relocated to Kenwood Elementary School last month. Ramey has filed a charge of discrimination against the district for the punishment.

Mahomet-Seymour Instructional Coach Caitlin Megginson-Dicken was approved at the Monday Board of Education meeting to be the new assistant principal for Kenwood Elementary School starting in July.

WCIA asked the district for any formal records of disciplinary action against Rebecca Ramey between March 5 and March 22 using the Freedom of Information Act, during the time period Ramey was reassigned. The district said on March 29 they had “no responsive documents”. Her personnel records that WCIA obtained previously show she achieved tenured status with the district on August 2021.

On Monday, several members of the community commented how beneficial the leadership has helped Booker T. Washington students.

“The person when you go to for the family barbecue, that person you look for, that is Ms. Ramey for a lot of kids,” Victoria Valadez, a mother of a Booker T. Washington graduate, said at the Monday night meeting. “She was ripped away from them, and I don’t feel like that’s fair to them.”
