Gannett Co., Inc., the company that owns the Bartlesville Examiner-Enterprise, has sold the newspaper's building to Boles Management Inc. for an undisclosed price. The closing was completed Nov. 30.

The sale will not affect the newspaper's daily operations. Gannett will maintain ownership of the newspaper. Staff members will work remotely as most have done in recent months.

"At this time, I have no details on how I will repurpose the building," said Byron Boles, owner of Boles Management Inc., a commercial property management company.

He said Sparklight Internet will continue to lease a portion of the building for their offices. Boles Management has also leased back a small space in the building to the E-E for newspaper distribution purposes.

The building at 4125 Nowata Road has housed the Examiner-Enterprise since 1995 on the site of an old drive-in theater called the Hilltop Drive-In. Back then, the newspaper employed around 35 people.

Since then, the size of the newspaper staff has dropped to six people amid recent rounds of layoffs. The editorial staff consists of one news reporter, a news editor and a sports editor.

In late 2021, the E-E closed its printer and outsourced printing to the Tulsa World.

The sale of the building reflects efforts to reduce costs in an increasingly fragile economic environment for newspapers nationwide.
