Boil water order issued for Tallgrass mobile home community

COLDWATER — Residents of the Tallgrass mobile home community at 260 E. Garfield Road must boil water until the system is certified safe, the Coldwater Board of Public Utilities said Monday night.

CBPU cut off water to the 226 lots around 2:30 p.m. Monday after a driver struck a fire hydrant and broke it, damaging the development’s internal water system.

Water superintendent Brian Musselman said that to stop the flow, CBPU had to shut off the water to the park, which depressurized the system.

Musselman told the city council Monday night health officials typically require the private water system to remain disconnected while repairs are made, then chlorinated and flushed for three days while testing for safety.

Musselman said the state approved it Monday evening, “Allowing the repair then turning the water back on.”

Crews from Parrish Construction installed a new hydrant. CBPU turned the park water valve on just before 7 p.m.

The CBPU superintendent said the system will keep a couple of hydrants open at a very slow rate to get water back into the system. “We will test, retest, and keep the hydrants running for two days.”

With water in the system, the park tenants will have water that must be boiled for consumption or cooking until tests confirm there is no contamination.

Musselman said, “Just the mobile home park, not the city of Coldwater, will be under a boil water advisory” until further notice.
