Boil water advisory issued in Newport until further notice following water main break

A boil water advisory has been put in place for almost 800 Newport residents following a water main break on Monday night, according to the town.

Veolia Water, which provides water service in the town, posted on their website that a main break on North Mary Street led to a loss of positive water pressure, which could allow contaminants to enter through back-flow. The company said the break has been isolated and is being repaired, and water service has been restored to all customers.

However, a boil water advisory will remain in effect until further notice.

How do I make sure my water is safe?

Anyone under a boil water advisory should bring their water to a rolling boil, let it boil for at least a minute and then let it cool naturally before using it, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Extra water can be stored in clean containers with covers.

You can also use bottled water instead of boiling water from the tap.

These precautions should be taken with any water used for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth and food preparation.

Who is affected?

The town of Newport said that any Veolia customers living on Ayre Street or north of it could have contaminated water. Veolia said it had notified all customers in the affected area and reached out to leadership at Richey Elementary School, which is also under the boil water advisory.

Veolia customers will be notified when the advisory is lifted.
