Bohn Pool set to open June 3 with new boiler, new filtration pump

ADRIAN — Opening day at Adrian’s Bohn Pool for the 2024 summer swimming season is set for June 3, and city officials said preparations are currently “full speed ahead” and will continue over the next handful of weeks.

To prepare for this summer’s swimming season, Bohn Pool in Riverside Park will operate with a new boiler, a new water filtration pump and a full team of employees.

The pool is going to be busy almost every day in the summer from about 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Jeremiah Davies, Adrian parks and recreation director, said during the Adrian City Commission’s premeeting work study session May 6.

Last year was another summer of recent struggles in making sure Bohn Pool, an almost 52-year-old facility, could last for the entire season. Some of last year’s season was cut short because the pool dealt with a trio of issues including a boiler failure that delayed the start of the season, a faulty water filtration pump and problems with the chemical delivery system.

In January, Adrian Mechanical Services Co. was selected by the city commission to complete repairs at the pool at a price tag of $56,610, which was the lowest of four bids received by the city.

Some new offerings are being added for this summer to ensure residents get the best experience out of their community pool, Davies said.

Lane swimming, for example, will be open to Bohn Pool members from 6 to 7:45 a.m. throughout the summer. Because of an increased number of staffing hires, there are enough employees for the pool to offer morning and evening swimming lessons, Davies added.

Group swimming lessons and private lessons are both expected to be offered this summer.

Davies presented a set of fees and rates to the commission for swimming lessons for Adrian residents and Adrian Public Schools students as well as non-residents utilizing the pool:

  • Group rate swimming lessons: $40 per session for Adrian residents and Adrian Public Schools students; $50 per session for non-residents.

  • Private swimming lessons: $60 per session for Adrian residents and Adrian Public Schools students; $75 per session for non-residents.

Those rates are expected to be up for approval by the city commission at its May 20 meeting.

A session of swimming lessons, as explained by Davies, includes eight 45-minute classes with a maximum of five students per group. As of now, all swimming lessons being offered this summer are for children in kindergarten through the fifth grade, Davies told the commission.

Commissioner Gordon Gauss clarified with Davies that when it comes to swimming lessons, anyone older than fifth grade would be unable to take classes.

“That’s something we would have to speak with management about,” Davies replied. “Really, their focus is on the little ones. We can make some concessions. We’re willing to do that. The focus is on the really small ones to try to get that baseline set.”

Bohn Pool will have two lifeguards and an on-deck staff member assisting during each lesson.

Several varsity swimming coaches and swimmers from Adrian High School make up Bohn Pool’s management.

“This is just kind of a continuation of the fantastic partnership we have with Adrian Public Schools,” Davies said. “It’s very seamless for us to move (swimming lessons) through.”

As of May 7, the pool's website, bohnpool.com, is available for people to browse online. The website is useful for purchasing season and family passes to the pool, Davies said, as well as viewing upcoming pool event dates.
