Body found near Byron City Hall

Jul. 17—BYRON — The Olmsted County Sheriff's Office recovered a deceased male in the retention pond behind Byron City Hall on Monday afternoon, July 17, 2023.

Sheriff Kevin Torgerson said the body was recovered after the office received a call about "suspicious circumstances" at city hall. A Byron community member reported the circumstances from "several nights ago in the nighttime hours," according to a statement from the sheriff's office. Additional information on the circumstances is not available.

As of 6 p.m. Monday, the scene has been cleared. There are "still a lot of unknowns," Torgerson said. The sheriff's office also asked people to stay away from Byron City Hall in the afternoon. City Hall is at 680 Byron Main Court NE.

The Southeast Minnesota Regional Medical Examiner's Office is conducting an autopsy on the body.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is also helping with the ongoing investigation.
