Body Found in Burning Car Believed to Be Florida Woman Involved in Alleged Carjacking

A body found in a burned car in Florida is believed to belong to a woman who went missing in a possible carjacking just days ago.

According to the Seminole County Sheriff's Office in Florida, 31-year-old Katherine Altagracia Guerrero De Aguasvivas went missing after she was involved in an alleged carjacking on April 11 in the Winter Springs area — more than 250 miles away from her home in southern Florida.

Now, according to a press conference held by the sheriff's office on April 12, Guerrero De Aguasvivas' case is considered a homicide investigation, after her body may have been discovered in a burned car in neighboring Osceola County.

On April 11, the sheriff's office issued an alert following the carjacking, warning local residents to be on the lookout for Guerrero De Aguasvivas and her missing car.

In a video of the incident captured by a nearby witness, a green Acura could be seen ramming into the back of Guerrero De Aguasvivas' car, and a male suspect wearing a mask could be seen pointing a weapon at her before getting in the back seat of her car.

According to Sheriff Dennis M. Lemma, the suspect in the green Acura (plus another suspect who stayed in the car) followed Guerrero De Aguasvivas as she was driving near Orlando. Police said that she called her husband after the car began ramming into her car, and he advised her not to stop.

Lemma added that neither Guerrero De Aguasvivas nor her husband made a report to police at the time.

She eventually came to a stoplight and, according to the video footage obtained by local station WESH, unlocked the car doors when the suspect pointed his gun at her.

"It is incredibly frightening to watch the boldness of this suspect, this perpetrator getting out of the car, wearing a hood, carrying a weapon in broad daylight, getting in the vehicle," Lemma said at the press conference.

Less than two hours after the alleged carjacking, witnesses reported hearing gunshots and seeing smoke from a car fire in a remote area in Osceola County, Lemma said. The car and body were badly burned, he added.

A dozen 10mm shell casings were found at the scene, and although police are still awaiting confirmation from dental records and DNA evidence, Lemma stated that authorities believe the body belonged to Guerrero De Aguasvivas and that the car was her white Dodge Durango.

The sheriff added during the press conference that no motive is known at this time, but the assailants may have known "exactly who they were following."

"There's no clear indicator why somebody would do this, why somebody would target them," Lemma said. "But we do feel and believe ... that this was not a random act of violence. The perpetrators knew exactly who they were going after, why they were going after them."

Lemma added that the woman was originally from the Dominican Republic and was a U.S. citizen. She lived with her husband in Homestead, where the pair worked at a barbershop and beauty salon.

The Seminole County Sheriff's Office is encouraging any witnesses who have further information about the potential carjacking to reach out.
