Body of Cpl. Humberto Sanchez expected to return home Sunday, Sept. 12

Sep. 3—The outpouring of respect and concern for Marine Corps Cpl. Humberto Sanchez's family has been overwhelming.

From Facebook posts to telephone calls and emails, people from all over the country have been seeking information about the fallen hero's services.

As of Friday, the Pharos-Tribune was informed that Cpl. Sanchez will be transported home to Logansport on Sunday, Sept. 12. According to Gundrum Funeral Home & Crematory, which is in charge of arrangements, the specific details are not yet available.

The 2017 Logansport High School graduate was assigned to the Marine Corps 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California. He was stationed in Jordan, where he worked as an embassy guard.

When the Taliban took over Afghanistan and chaos erupted, Sanchez's unit was reassigned because of its proximity to the Kabul airport. It was there, inside the gates of the Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, Afghanistan, where Sanchez, 22, was killed during an enemy attack on Aug. 26.

Since the devastating news broke, the Logansport community has continued to reach out by starting fundraisers for the family, painting murals throughout town and honoring all military service members through moments of silence and tributes.

For now, though, the community awaits service details while times and route information are still being considered. More details will be released as they become available.
