The body of Lucas Macaj was recovered on Mills Glacier, Colo., on Thursday, May 16, officials at Rocky Mountain National Park said.

Macaj, 23, was reported missing after a hiking excursion on the Longs Peak summit on Sunday, May 12. He was last heard from around 1 p.m. local time that day. The search for Macaj began on Monday, May 13, and rangers located his parked vehicle at the Longs Peak Trailhead.

"Initial investigations indicate he took a significant fall. Rocky Mountain National Park rangers completed an on-scene investigation and recovery operations took place by helicopter," Rocky Mountain National Park spokesperson Kyle Patterson said in a news release.

Macaj's body was then flown to a "landing zone in Rocky Mountain National Park and transferred to the Boulder County Coroner’s Office," per the release.

Macaj's cause of death has not been released.

The discovery follows four days of search efforts, which included air reconnaissance, "a heat-sensing fixed-wing flight and ground teams on the Keyhole Route" — an area Macaj hiked — and the Boulder Brook Trail.

"Ground teams skied into the Hunter’s Creek drainage to the base of Keplinger’s Coulier," Patterson said in a statement Wednesday. A dog team searched the Longs Peak Trail to Battle Mountain Junction, while a third team hiked Chasm Shelter to the Loft and "other areas between Longs Peak and Mount Meeker."

Additionally, the team took shelter on Wednesday night and, on Thursday, skied the Clark’s Arrow Route to the top of Keplinger’s Coulier in search of Macaj.

Meanwhile, the Colorado Search and Rescue Association (CSAR), Search and Rescue Dogs of the United States, and Larimer County SAR Dog Team were assisted by the Boulder County Sheriff Dog Team, the Park County SAR Dog Team, and the El Paso County SAR Dog Team.
