Union Rags stole the race down the final stretch from Paynter, a horse trained by Bob Baffert. Baffert rode Bodemeister in the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, and came in second in both of those races. There wasn't any media storm when, just a few days before the Belmont, Baffert decided to pull Bodemeister from the race. The Belmont is the longest race of the Triple Crown, and Bodemeister was leading in the Derby and the Preakness until I'll Have Another overtook him down the stretch. They opted for Paynter instead, but Baffert still couldn't shake his attachment to second place.
