Board of Public Works approves contract for city cameras

Apr. 19—New safety features, a new summer intern and the monthly report of the Parks Department were just some of the items on the Logansport Board of Public Works and Safety's agenda Wednesday afternoon.

Logansport Chief of Police Travis Yike presented a contract with Flock Safety, a safety technology company, to lend their services to the city of Logansport. Yike said they have been discussing this contract since February, and the board approved this agreement during Wednesday's meeting.

As part of this contract, cameras will be installed by Flock Safety at locations in Logansport, Cass County and a few surrounding counties. Yike said if something like a stolen vehicle were to pass by the camera, it would be entered into a system and anyone who participates with the Flock Safety cameras would be notified.

Other cameras would be notified as well if the car were to pass them.

"... so, if it, say, went from here through a different county, White County or whatever county that had that Flock camera system, they could pick it up as well," Yike said to the board. "So, we can share data information across different agencies from different states as well for that information; stolen vehicles or unlicensed drivers, wanted people, those types of things as well."

Parks department monthly report

Parks Administrator Janet Fawley presented the monthly report for the Parks Department, saying they have been busy lately with projects, recreational activities and maintenance.

Some items on the report include reaching $3 million in donations for the Dykeman Clubhouse, completing construction on the new Muehlhausen Playground, continuing construction on the Wright Street Bark Park and making progress on stabilizing the lower Spencer Park shelter.

Fawley also spoke on recreational activities they have hosted, like the Park in the Box events, Spring Break Art Classes and the Total Eclipse of the Sun party.

"I think we probably had 8 or 900 people there [at the Total Eclipse of the Sun party]," Fawley said to the board. "It was [an] amazing day and even though we weren't in the path of totality, it was really a good thing."

She also discussed planning the department is making on upcoming activities like the Daddy/Daughter Dance. She said they have opened registration for this event, scheduled to take place on May 9.

However, it was not all positive, as she mentioned an act of vandalism that happened over the weekend at different park restrooms.

"... somebody... took their own excrement and spread it all over three different bathroom walls," Fawley said. "I don't understand people like that, but that's what happened."

Summer intern services agreement

The board signed a contract agreeing to have 18-year-old Bryce Howard, graduate of Logansport High School, serve as an executive intern this summer. According to Mayor Chris Martin, he has an interest in local government and politics.

As per the agreement, Howard will perform graphic work, assist with various clerical and administrative duties, advise city officials regarding the youth, serve as a representative for the Mayor or Deputy Mayor and other tasks.
