And it was sad. So very sad.

"A mother is holding her newborn young," Attenborough explained on the show, which recently made viewers ashamed of the state of the planet's coral reefs. "It's dead. She is reluctant to let it go and has been carrying it around for many days.

"[We] dump eight million tonnes of plastic into the sea. [It] entangles and drowns a vast number of creatures".

"The calf may have been poisoned by the mother's own contaminated milk," he added of the incredible creatures.

"Pilot whales have big brains, and they can certainly experience emotions.

"Judging the adults, the loss of the infant has affected the entire family."

The upset of the baby whale's death was felt far beyond the ocean and into the Twittersphere, as viewers started to become very distressed watching the findings.

Expressing their heartbreak for the baby whale and their disbelief at the dangers of plastic pollution across social media, some viewers even vowed to do more to counteract plastic pollution after watching the devastating scenes play out.
