The UpshotStudents wish Giffords well
Rep. Gabrielle Giffords continues to recover from the shooting attack she suffered in Tucson, Ariz., earlier this month. The Democratic congresswoman, who President Obama honored during last night's State of the Union address, was transferred this past weekend from intensive care to Houston's Institute for Research and Rehabilitation.
According to the AP, doctors have upgraded her status from serious to good. While Rep. Giffords still faces a long road, her steady progress has encouraged doctors and her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly.
Kelly watched the State of the Union with his wife from her hospital room in Houston. Kelly mentioned that his wife had watched television for an hour earlier, a sign that her attention span is continuing to improve. Kelly called the news "exciting."
A friend of Giffords', Florida Democratic Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, remarked that "with each day she's able to do things that are a little more complex than she had been doing before." Kelly has said that within the next few weeks, he'll decide if he will resume training for his upcoming shuttle mission or if he'll stay with his wife.
Giffords has, of course, had many well wishers. Young sudents from a Tucson school sent her heartwarming get-well cards. The cards included "sweet and plain-spoken" phrases like: "You are good at a lot of stuff," "My whole class (is) concerned about you," and "When you feel better I hope you can do what you were elected for."
