Will Lindsay Lohan be an issue in Florida Senate race?

Florida Democratic Senate candidate Jeff Greene has already gotten attention for fraternizing with celebrities who have run afoul of the law, such as Mike Tyson and ex-Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss.

But the St. Petersburg Times' Adam Smith blogs about another Greene pal who is now bound for a tour in the hoosegow: troubled starlet Lindsay Lohan, who partied with the Palm Beach financier this past New Year’s Eve in St. Barts. The two were photographed by paparazzi leaving a yacht and later at a nightclub along with Lohan’s 16-year-old sister, Ali.

Greene, who has spent nearly $5 million of his own cash on his campaign, is waging a tougher-than-expected challenge to Rep. Kendrick Meek in the state’s Democratic Senate primary. According to a recent Quinnipiac poll, Meek leads Greene by just two points. So you have to wonder: Will Meek make an issue out of Lohan and Greene’s other celeb friends?

It wouldn’t be the first time a candidate has made an issue out of celebrity. (Remember that Britney Spears ad John McCain ran against Barack Obama?) Greene has tried to campaign as someone who could bring solutions to help Florida's struggling economy, but Meek has countered that argument by arguing that Greene is a millionaire who is out of touch with average Florida voters — a point a few strategically placed paparazzi photos might help reinforce.
