'Game of Thrones' Star Gemma Whelan Reveals 'Weird' Audition to Play Yara Greyjoy [Video]

Auditions can be nerve-wracking affairs for actors. Imagine how daunting one is for a hit show like "Game of Thrones"!

Even more so since the HBO drama features some, uh, suggestive scenes. Gemma Whelan had to perform one such scene — pleasuring somebody while riding a horse — in her audition for Yara Greyjoy.

"It was weird, but the casting director makes you feel ... so comfortable," the actress said while appearing on Yahoo! UK's "Fringe in Five" chat show to promote her two shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

"I just had to pretend I was on a horse and I was 'seeing to' somebody behind me as I rode my horse and [the casting director] said, 'Look straight down the barrel of the camera and just go for it.' So there I was."

If Whelan could get through that awkward experience, playing the tough and formidable Yara should be a cakewalk.

She also revealed that it was serendipity that even got her the audition in the first place.

"I did an audition for a completely different thing — a comedy called 'Threesome' — and the same casting director was on that as 'Game of Thrones' that was casting the following week and I think he thought I might be appropriate [for that]," she said.

"I went home and watched [Season 1] back to back and thought, 'This could be really fun. I'm never going to get this. Oh well, I'll just prepare really well.'"

That must've been some interesting practice sessions!
