‘Top of The Morning’ Author Brian Stelter Talks Morning Show Wars and Future of Social Media

Whether you watch "Good Morning America," "Today," or any other morning news show, you are likely to have heard the following names -- Matt Lauer, Al Roker, Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos, and Natalie Morales -- because they have become a part of our morning routines. Maybe your eyes are glued to the TV each morning as you listen intently to what they report. Maybe you watch them as you're getting dressed or they serve as background noise during your other morning rituals. In any case, you have made some kind of a connection to those personalities. But do you really know them?

Brian Stelter, a name you may not be as familiar with, wrote the book "Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV," and while it will not give you every detail of morning news anchors' lives, it will certainly paint a vivid picture of what goes on behind the scenes of the shows we allow into our homes on a daily basis.

Stelter is the founder of TV Newser, the news blog he founded when he was still a college student at Towson University. Currently a media reporter for the New York Times, he was allowed unprecedented access to gather the information for his book, and he poured it all into the book's 312 pages.

As Stelter made the rounds for his book tour, I asked him about his scariest moment so far and what it feels like to have the tables turned and be the interviewee instead of the interviewer. He said that hands down, it was his Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on Reddit. He said people were not just talking about his new book but asking him about his childhood and websites he'd created when he was younger.

While chatting with us at Trending Now about his new book, Stelter discussed the changing landscape of morning TV news, how social media affects the way news breaks, and what's next for him. He revealed that another book may already be in the works. As for a movie or a TV show based on his current book, we'll just have to wait and see. He said the real thing is already so good, it simply could not be scripted.
