Tennessee Grandmother Pens Song in Support of Same-Sex Marriage

It's the end of May, and to many people around the world, that signals weekends filled with graduations and weddings. People are searching for the best presents for those reaching these milestones. When it comes to weddings, one woman's gift is making waves around the Web.

As reported by Gay Star News, 72-year-old Sherri Gray, from Nashville, Tennessee, wrote and recorded a support song as a gift to her niece Shannon and her fiancée, Lisa, for their upcoming wedding. Gray uploaded a video of her singing the song to YouTube. While playing the piano and sporting a T-shirt that reads, "Straight But Not Narrow," she belts out the tune, "What If We Are Just Like You? (Shannon and Lisa's Song)." "The world will bless the wedding of a woman to a man. While he and he and she and she are told they never can. We laugh, we cry, we die and live. We try to fit. We work. We give. We have a goal. We have a soul."

In the description of the video, Gray wrote, "I wrote this song about equal rights not only for them but also for everyone who is either a member of or who loves a member of the GLBTQ community." So far, she has not received even one thumbs down in the ratings, and people are appreciating her positive message. One fan wrote, "You're pretty much the greatest lady on the internet ever."

Gray told Gay Star News, "I'm not an activist, but I get goddamn mad by narrow-mindedness and prejudice and crazy stuff." Shannon and Lisa called the song the best wedding gift ever and asked her to sing it live at their wedding.

The ladies are scheduled to exchange vows in August.
