What planet are these photos from?

A remarkable new set of photos featuring rivers that look like trees and rocks that look like feathers certainly seems like images from a distant planet.

In fact, they're all aerial photographs of Iceland's otherworldly geography, shot by Russian photographer Andrey Ermolaev. A local pilot who was familiar with the island's unusual features took Ermolaev up in his Cessna and flew them over volcanic sands and melting glaciers. The 56-year-old photographer pointed his lens out the aircraft's window as they flew 75 miles per hour.

The result is a set of images that look more like abstract paintings. Says Ermolaev, "The landscapes are so unusual that if you don't mention at once what they show, people don't understand what they properly see."
