Did you hear about Mila Kunis accepting a Marine's YouTube invitation to this year's Marine Corps Ball? Well, her "Friends with Benefits" co-star Justin Timberlake played a big part in getting Kunis to say "Yes." In an interview to promote their upcoming film, Kunis was asked about the invite and Timberlake told her, "You have to do it for your country." Timberlake then said about the Marine, "You know what man? I'm going to work on this for you." Kunis replied, "I'll go. I'll do it for you. And it's November. OK. We're going to make this happen, sir. I'm with you." Although some reports are saying Mila's movie shooting duties in November would not make it possible for her to make the ball, her rep says they are working on her production schedule to make it happen. Now it's Timberlake's turn. Cpl. Kelsey De Santis, the only woman at the Marines' Martial Arts Center for Excellence, made her own YouTube plea asking Timberlake to be her date at the Marine Corps Ball (my favorite part of the video is the dudes standing with their arms crossed behind her). Unsurprisingly, De Santis is not going down without a fight. She created a Facebook page titled "Let's Get Justin Timberlake to the Marine Corps Ball with Kelsey." Timberlake hasn't responded yet, and some people on Twitter are wondering if the whole thing is a PR stunt ahead of the actors' upcoming movie.
After yesterday's fatal bombings in Mumbai, social media were used not only to spread news, they also filled in as an emergency response tool. A site called Mumbai Unites features an interactive map that shows where people are stranded, where help is available, and where open shelters are located. The site also has a live feed of the hashtags #needhelp and #here2help, where users can connect through Twitter to find places to stay, transportation, and even blood types. One person summed up social media's contribution to the relief effort, saying, "Twitter has made the world a smaller place, and tonight we saw how that helps people."
Lastly, Oprah Winfrey will be devoting a lot more to the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) than just her name. The former queen of daytime TV named herself the CEO of the struggling company yesterday, expanding her role as chairman. She will be OWN's fourth leader since its formation in 2008. In a statement Winfrey said, "I am ready to dedicate my full creative energy and focus as the full-time CEO of OWN." In a long Facebook post, she compared the move to her struggles with swimming, saying, "Move with the flow, don't fight the current. Resist nothing. Let life carry you." With a slew of shows launching on OWN this fall, including a Rosie O'Donnell talk show, we'll see if the current is carrying Oprah in the right direction.
