As someone who was adopted, Katheryn Deprill knew that a part of her was missing. She could never have imagined that she would have so much in common with that missing link.
Deprill first made headlines in 1986, when she was abandoned in a Burger King restaurant in Pennsylvania just a few hours after her birth. Last month, the Allentown, Pa., native returned to the news when she posted a Facebook message in hopes of finding her biological mother.
"Looking for my birth mother. She gave birth to me September 15th, 1986," a note she held in the photo read. "She abandoned me in the Burger King bathroom only hours old, Allentown PA. Please help me find her by sharing my post. Maybe she will see this."
Cathy Pochek and her husband did see it and immediately contacted their lawyer to coordinate a meeting. Yesterday, the two appeared for the first time in public on the "Today" show.
The 44-year-old mother shed light on why she abandoned her daughter in such a hasty fashion. Pochek said she was raped when she was 16 and was scared of telling anyone about the attack or her subsequent pregnancy.
"If we can help some other girl that is in the situation that I was in, it's worth a little bit of judgment that people might bring upon us," Pochek said. "If it's just one girl that we can help, it's worth it."
For now, Pochek and Deprill are simply catching up on the years that they spent apart. In the process, they are learning they have an alarming number of similarities.
Both of their full names are the same, just spelled differently: Katheryn Ann and Catherine Anne. This is a bit out of the ordinary, because Katheryn's adoptive mother, Brenda Hollis, named her. The mother and daughter also drive the same make and color of car, work as emergency medical technicians, and live near Allentown.
But what might have shocked Deprill more than any of those parallels was the fact that her mother met her husband before she did. Pochek baby-sat her daughter's spouse when he was a child.
