Weekend in politics: Obama meets with Karzai, and more

President Barack Obama and Afghan President Hamid Karzai meet Friday at the White House to discuss the future of the U.S. role in Afghanistan. Most international troops are scheduled to leave Afghanistan by the end of 2014.

Obama and Karzai will follow their meeting with a joint press conference at 1:15 p.m. EST. Obama will not announce any decisions on the next phase of troop withdrawals or whether any U.S. forces will stay behind in Afghanistan after 2014, the Associated Press reports.

Karzai met with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta on Thursday.

Vice President Joe Biden meets with representatives of the video game industry Friday. The goal is to explore cultural factors that might lead to violent behavior.

The meeting is one of a series Biden has held as he prepares to present President Obama with gun violence proposals on Tuesday. Obama charged Biden with coming up with proposals after the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., which left 20 children and six adults dead.

Biden said Thursday that his proposals would include more comprehensive background checks and limits on ammunition magazine sizes, but, Yahoo News reporter Liz Goodwin notes, an assault weapons ban was missing.

The Sunday morning talk shows are certain to explore what’s ahead in the gun violence debate.

And then there is this: Conservative radio show host and political commentator Rush Limbaugh turns 62 on Saturday.
