Wednesday in politics: first presidential debate, and more

It's the first of three presidential debates. That's it. That's the story on Wednesday.

The time: 9 p.m. EDT.

The place: University of Denver, Denver, Colo.

The moderator: Jim Lehrer, host of the NewsHour on PBS.

The topic: Domestic policy.

At one podium, President Barack Obama, coming off three days of debate prep.

At the other: Mitt Romney, coming off final prepping at a Denver hotel.

Attending: First lady Michelle Obama and Ann Romney.

The question: Will either candidate step away from the debate stage as a clear winner, having a scored a moment that moved the polling needle?

While the candidates get ready for the showdown, their surrogates will be out there campaigning on Wednesday. Bill Clinton will be stumping for Obama in New Hampshire; Sen. Marco Rubio in Colorado for Romney; Michelle Obama will be at an event in Nevada; and Sen. John McCain will continue a bus tour across Florida for Romney.

And then there is this: The first lady also will be on television Wednesday. She'll appear on the new syndicated daytime show, "Steve Harvey," in a segment that was taped last Thursday before an audience in Mrs. Obama's hometown of Chicago.
