Romney campaign claims Obama is ‘fixated’ on him

Mitt Romney's campaign is claiming that President Obama and his Democratic allies are "fixated" on the former Massachusetts governor ahead of the 2012 election.

In an email sent to reporters today, the Romney campaign pointed out a litany of attacks lobbed at the Republican presidential hopeful by the Obama campaign and its supporters. The statement was headlined, "You're My Obsession," a nod to the popular '80s new wave song by Animotion.

"With each passing day, it is becoming increasingly clear that President Obama and his Democrat allies are fixated more on Mitt Romney than on turning around our struggling economy," Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul said in the email. "If the past is any guide, we expect this obsession will grow."

Atop the email was a graphic modeled after Obama's re-election logo that read "Obsession."

Obama campaign aides have repeatedly refused to say if they consider Romney the frontrunner for the Republican nomination, but as The Ticket has previously reported, they have largely ignored the rest of the 2012 field in favor of attacking Romney.

The Romney campaign's email suggests that Team Romney is somehow irked by the attacks--but in reality, Romney strategists are probably quite pleased that their candidate is drawing the bulk of pushback from Democrats this early in the 2012 GOP race. Such attacks give license to the ex-governor to look beyond the GOP nomination race and cast his campaign as a face-off between him and Obama—a maneuver that matches up perfectly with the strategy that Romney has been pursuing for months.
