Monday in politics: Senate hearing on immigration, and more

A long list of witnesses is scheduled to testify Monday at a hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee on the immigration reform bill, which was unveiled last week.

Some Republicans have called for slowing down action on the legislation, but Judiciary Committee Chairman Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont is pushing a schedule that would ensure the bill reaches the Senate floor this summer.

Also worth noting on a day that that is starting out slow in terms of scheduled events: Secretary of State John Kerry visits Brussels to participate in a meeting of NATO foreign ministers. Secretary Kerry arrives in Belgium after attending the Friends of Syria meeting in Turkey this weekend.

And then there is this: President Barack Obama hosts the White House Science Fair to celebrate the student winners of a range of science, technology, engineering and math competitions from across the country. The first White House Science Fair was held in October 2010 as part of Obama’s “Educate to Innovate” campaign.
