Monday in politics: Obama campaigns for gun proposals, and more

President Barack Obama will travel to Minnesota on Monday to campaign for his gun proposals.

Obama will visit the Minneapolis Police Department’s Special Operations Center where he will make remarks and discuss the city’s recent efforts to reduce gun violence, including a push for stricter background checks.

Minneapolis will mark Obama’s first trip outside of Washington to promote his call for a ban on assault weapons and universal background checks.

Also worth noting on Monday: Vice President Joe Biden and second lady Jill Biden are in France as they continue their swing through Europe; the Senate is expected to begin debate on the “Violence Against Women Act” reauthorization; and former President Bill Clinton will speak at Ed Koch’s funeral service.

And then there is this: New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie will make his first appearance on the “Late Show With David Letterman.”

What to watch for later this week: The Senate might vote on Chuck Hagel’s nomination to be the next secretary of defense.
