Monday in politics: Obama awards Medal of Honor, Biden discusses guns, and more

President Barack Obama will award the Medal of Honor to Staff Sgt. (Ret.) Clinton Romesha on Monday afternoon.

Romesha is receiving the medal for courageous actions in combat in Afghanistan in October 2009. He is the fourth living soldier from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to receive the award. Romesha’s family and first lady Michelle Obama will attend the White House ceremony.

Vice President Joe Biden will be in Philadelphia on Monday to hold a roundtable discussion with law enforcement officials on gun safety. Biden led a task force for Obama that resulted in proposals for universal background checks and bans on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines.

Most of the buzz in Washington on Monday will be focused on Obama’s State of the Union address. Politicians and pundits will be watching for more signals as to what the president will say and then making predictions as to what kind of reception he will get.

And then there is this: Jeb Bush, former Florida governor and often mentioned as a possible GOP presidential candidate, turns 60 on Monday.
