Colbert’s super PAC funds to be donated to charity

"The Colbert Report" host Stephen Colbert announced on his show Thursday night that his super PAC's remaining $773,704.83 will be donated to charity.

"As a board member, I wanted that money to go to UNICEF," Colbert said. "Unfortunately, the rest of the board found out that UNICEF is the name of my yacht."

But in all seriousness, Colbert announced that the "Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow" super PAC plans to donate $125,000 each to DonorsChoose.org's Hurricane Sandy Relief fund, disaster relief organization Team Rubicon's Sandy outreach, and Habitat for Humanity, which is building homes for storm victims.

Another $125,000 will be donated to the Yellow Ribbon Fund for injured veterans and their families.

The remainder will be split between the Center for Responsive Politics and the Campaign Legal Center.

Colbert formed his super PAC to mock the Supreme Court's 2010 ruling Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, which paved the way for super PACs and other groups with unlimited spending capacity, some of which are not required to report their donors. But the PAC ended up raising significant funds and even purchased some advertising during the 2012 campaign (including promotion of a "Rick Parry" write-in campaign).
