Today in TechWatch a man fly across Rio de Janeiro using a jet pack he built himself
Looking for an exciting way to spend your summer vacation? Forget the world's largest free fall swing, and don't even bother gassing up the hovercraft. The only real way to get your adrenaline fix this summer is to streak across the skies of Rio de Janeiro on a four-engine winged jet pack, just like the brave soul above.
Yves "Jetman" Rossy, a former jet pilot, spent just under 12 minutes in the air strapped to the propulsion device, which he actually made himself. After starting the flight by jumping out of a helicopter, Rossy cruised past the city's iconic Christ the Redeemer statue before parachuting back down to earth to Copacabana beach. The flight represents the first time anyone's ever flown past the statue on jet-propelled wings, which doesn't really surprise us considering how few people we see suiting up as human airplanes.
This isn't Rossy's first flight either — he's also flown over the Grand Canyon on his jet pack. We'll gladly admit that being a globe-trotting "Jetman" is pretty impressive, but we've seen better. After all, flying through the skies of Brazil is one thing, but doing it at 104 years of age... now that'd impress us.
