Today in TechNo iPad or iPhone for Bill Gates’ kids
Apple's iPhone and iPad are two of the hottest pieces of consumer electronics on the market today, so it makes sense that former Microsoft boss Bill Gates would have one or two of the gadgets lying around his home. Not so. In fact, when Gates' children — Jennifer, 15, Rory, 12, and Pheobe, 9 — asked for one of Apple's shiny handsets, Gates provided them with a Zune, the now-defunct Microsoft equivalent of the iPod.
Gates revealed this and other facts in an uncharacteristically candid interview with the Daily Mail. The talk focused largely on Gates' philanthropy and his new day job managing the operations of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. While the billiionaire's goal 25 years ago might have revolved around curing buggy code, he now hopes to help cure malaria and other worldwide health problems. He has personally donated $28 billion to charity, and his current net worth stands at around $56 billion, making him the second richest person in the world.
Gates plans on donating nearly all of his wealth to charity when he passes away, leaving just a sliver of his vast riches for his youngsters. "They will be given an unbelievable education and that will all be paid for. And certainly anything related to health issues we will take care of. But in terms of their income, they will have to pick a job they like and go to work," he says. Most speculate that the young Gates trio will get somewhere in the neighborhood of $10 million each, which should be plenty if they decide they still want to buy an Apple device down the line.
