Microsoft launches Xbox 360 TV partnership with HBO, Syfy, and more

In the ongoing push to turn video game consoles into do-it-all entertainment centers, Microsoft has now formed partnerships with several TV networks to bring a wealth of new programming to the Xbox 360. The content includes many popular channels as well as region-specific programming for the wide scope of countries in which the console is sold.

There will be a large variety of programming offered, including channels like Bravo, Epix, Syfy, and TMZ. HBO subscribers will even be able to enjoy the full catalog of content through HBO Go, and TV providers Comcast and Verizon are also on board. Unfortunately, the specifics of how each of these channels will operate — as well as any individual or package costs — remains up in the air.

The Xbox 360 has offered a small sampling of TV programming for many months now, including selected ESPN coverage and even live sports. However, in order to take advantage of these features, users must have a participating internet provider. It seems likely that in order to access the new TV offerings — which will launch on an unspecified date later this year — you will need to be a cable subscriber. More details are sure to come, and when they do we can more accurately judge the value of watching shows on the hardware that was made to play games.
