Lego Star Trek gear is out of this world

You can walk into countless stores and pick up official Lego Star Wars kits, but what if you're a Star Trek fan? Rather than wait for the Danish toymaker to fulfill your needs, you do what Tommy Williamson did and make them yourself.

Williamson used his considerable building skills and eye for detail to construct his own type two phaser, medical tricorder, and communicator based on those carried by Kirk, Spock, and Dr. McCoy in the cult hit 1960s-era original Star Trek series. The authenticity of his work is astounding; the tricorder even has storage compartments and working lights.

Might we suggest a future project for Williamson: Replicas of gadgets from Star Trek: The Next Generation, which arrives on Blu-Ray Disc for the first time this month. Of course, he could also construct a scale replica of a Borg cube, but we doubt there are enough Lego bricks on this planet — or any other — to make that geeky dream a reality.
