New air fragrance reproduces the smell of unboxing a MacBook Pro

Here at Tecca, we can remember the joy of finally opening that long-desired piece of electronics. That smell of the freshly-printed instruction booklet, the scent of the circuitry — it's all quite intoxicating. And perhaps that's why artists Gavin Bell, Jarrah de Kuijer, and Simon McGlinn created De facto Standard, a scent that recreates the smell of unboxing a brand new Apple MacBook Pro.

Creating the eau de new laptop was a painstaking process. A French laboratory had to first sample the aromas of different types of glue, plastic, rubber, and paper to recreate the experience. Every aspect of the unpacking was taken into account, from the plastic wrapping to the smell of the computer itself. After the components were determined, fragrance designers blended and bottled the scent.

If you want to enjoy the scent of a MacBook Pro, it's going to cost you $1,199. Not because that's the price of the scent, but because you'll have to buy the computer itself — De facto Standard is not available for purchase. The unique fragrance is only available for enjoyment in Melbourne's West Space, on exhibit from April 20 to May 12.
