Puppy overload: Dog breeder produces 27 puppies in three days

A dog breeder in Germany found herself with what veterinarians technically describe as a "pile of puppies," after two of her dogs gave birth to 27 mastiffs in the span of three days.

The breeder, Beatrice Oswald, told local media that Elfi, a two-year-old, gave birth to 11 puppies shortly before Anny, a three-year-old, whelped another 16.

The puppies are reported to be healthy, though Oswald and her friends have been bottle feeding some because the mothers have not been able to produce enough milk to feed the hungry pups.

While the combined litter is a record for the breeder, it's not the largest ever. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the largest single litter of puppies is 24, born to Tia, another mastiff, in Cambridgeshire, England in 2004.
