Monsanto protesters toss money off balcony in Senate office

Just when you thought Washington couldn't get any stranger, protesters dropped a bag of money off the balcony inside the Hart Senate Building. Make it rain, everybody!

BuzzFeed Politics reported that Capitol Police took the cash, believed to be around $500, into evidence. Three people were also "taken away by police."

It was all part of a protest against Monsanto, Charlie Spiering of the Washington Examiner reported. The agricultural conglomerate, opponents say, is spending millions to buy the votes it needs to make it easier to bring genetically altered foods to market.

The protesters, reportedly from the Organic Consumers Association and Occupy Monsanto, were heard to shout, "Monsanto money," according to Jared Gilmour of the Huffington Post.

Monsanto describes itself as a "a sustainable agriculture company" focused on "empowering farmers — large and small — to produce more from their land while conserving more of our world's natural resources such as water and energy."

Opponents are vowing a worldwide march against the company this Saturday with individual action in dozens of cities. According to the movement's official site, protest leaders are seeking "the permanent boycott of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) and other harmful agro-chemicals."
