Pope Francis to auction off Harley for charity

Here's something you might not have known: Pope Francis owns a Harley-Davidson. And he plans to auction off his hog to support organizations that help the homeless.

How in the world did his holiness come into possession of a Harley?

Earlier this year the pope gave a blessing to hundreds of Harley aficionados (and their rides) in St. Peter's Square, where he was presented with one. Money raised from the auction will go toward a Roman hostel and soup kitchen, the Daily Telegraph reports.

Pope Francis is well known for his work with the poor as well as his preference for cars that aren't exactly blinged out. During a recent trip to Brazil, Francis used a Fiat instead of the Mercedes-Benz popemobile. He has also been spotted in regular rides like Fords and Volkswagens, according to Rome Reports. As a cardinal, he reportedly favored public transportation.

Pope Francis has said he doesn't like seeing priests and sisters in new cars, according to the National Catholic Register.

“And, if you like that beautiful car, think about how many children are dying of hunger,” he was quoted as saying.

Enrico Feroci, director of the charity that the Harley auction will benefit, expressed his gratitude to Pope Francis.

“It is a precious gift that has once again made us happy in feeling the closeness of our bishop to the poor of the Church of Rome. We are deeply grateful to Pope Francis for this," he said at a recent press conference.
