Cobra Commander launches Kickstarter campaign

The crowd funding website Kickstarter has been on a roll recently, with supporters helping to launch a Veronica Mars feature film and a countless series of other fun and interestingly projects.

However, the limits of the site might be tested with a recent campaign launched by Cobra Commander, the head of the fictional terrorist organization from the world of G.I. Joe.

“I’d like to set the record straight, we are not a deadly, terrorist regime hell bent on world domination,” Cobra Commander makes clear in the video released by comedy sketch group D.S.MTN.

All he really wants is some startup cash to help rebuild Cobra Island, which was destroyed in a recent assault from the commandos over at team Joe. As Cobra Commander explains on the Kickstarter page:

“We are COBRA, a worldwide organization devoted to making advancements in science and defense technology.”

“Recently our home and secret base of operations was destroyed in an attack by the terrorist militia known as G.I. Joe.”

“So after discussing a plan of action with my colleagues Destro, Dr. Mindbender, and our business analysts Tomax and Xamot, we reached the conclusion that we need $94 billion to fully restore Cobra Island and the COBRA organization.”

“Although we have been previously attacked and defeated by the JOE's (approximately 634 times), COBRA keeps soldiering on. We are a resilient bunch.”

That’s right, they’re only asking for $94 billion. But there are perks for any potential donors. For example:

  • $10 gets you a “cool Cobra sticker”

  • $200 earns the services of the evil ninja Stormshadow for a week

  • $1,000 and you get your own Cobra persona and an honorary place in Cobra

  • $10,000 and Cobra Commander will reveal his “true identity”

And while Cobra Commander is making a grassroots pitch to dedicated fans, he’s also making a direct pitch to the global community:

“Take heed world leaders, you have 24 hours to help us reach this goal or I will unleash the M.A.S.S. Device and take over the world!”

But just to be clear, the Kickstarter page is not real. The folks behind the video set it up as a draft page since no actual Cobra organization currently exists. At least not that we know of.
