Borat anthem played during actual Kazakh gold medal ceremony

A gold medal-winning athlete on Kazakhstan's shooting team was unintentionally dishonored after organizers of a competition in Kuwait mistakenly played a parody of Kazakhstan's national anthem from the movie "Borat" during the event's awards ceremony.

When Maria Dmitrienko approached the stage to receive her medal at the 10th Arab Shooting Championship in Kuwait, the fictional anthem began playing, which includes derogatory lyrics such as:

Kazakhstan greatest country in the world.

All other countries are run by little girls.

Kazakhstan number one exporter of potassium.

Other countries have inferior potassium.

The BBC reports that the team quickly asked for an apology from the event's organizers and the medal ceremony was held again, minus the offensive music.

Dmitrienko appears to have taken the misstep in stride. In video captured from the event, she can be seen grinning slyly as the song comes to a close:

It's unlikely the playing of the parody national anthem was intentional. Kazakh coach Anvar Yunusmetov told his country's news agency Tengrinews that the Kuwaiti organizers also played the wrong national anthem for a Siberian runner-up during the ceremony. Yunusmetov said the event's organizers had downloaded the anthems from the Internet by mistake.

"Then Maria Dmitrienko's turn came," Yunusmetov said. "She got up on to the pedestal and they played a completely different anthem, offensive to Kazakhstan."

The 2006 film, officially titled "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan," was a hit in America but was actually banned in both Kazakhstan and Kuwait. In the film, actor Sacha Baron Cohen plays the fictional title character, who travels from Kazakhstan to America in search of love and contains a virtual nonstop barrage of jokes mocking both American and Kazakh culture.

There are several high-profile cases of celebrities running afoul of our own national anthem here in America. In 1990, comedian Roseanne Barr caused an uproar with her rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner," which some call the worst-ever live take on the song. Conversely, in 2006, NBA coach Maurice Cheeks became a hero for a day when he stepped in to help young Natalie Gilbert after she became nervous and forgot the words to the anthem.
