New Australian commercial: ‘You’re having a lesbian’

A pregnant woman holds her partner's hand while a hospital technician checks on the unborn baby with an ultrasound machine. The technician then turns to the couple and asks if they want to know what they're having. They nod.

"You're having a lesbian," the technician says. The overjoyed parents-to-be break into smiles.

The Australian commercial was created to promote awareness of and support for gay marriage, according to whatruhaving.org, the organization behind the video. There is also a similar billboard that features the tagline, "Congratulations, you're having a lesbian."

Shelley Argent, spokeswoman from Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, told Australia's news.com.au that the campaign was designed to show Australian families that children are born gay.

"Being lesbian or gay is not a choice," she told news.com.au. "It's got nothing to do with culture or parenting skills. It's just the way you are. You're born that way."

The campaign was thought up by Steve Minon, a freelance advertising creative director, according to news.com.au. "It is designed to get people thinking, and challenge them a little," he told the paper. "We're trying to point out to any family that marriage equality can be your number one priority, without your knowing about it."

Lawmakers in Australia voted against a bill to legalize same-sex marriage last September. Neighboring country New Zealand legalized same-sex marriage earlier this year.
