3.9-Magnitude Quake Rattles San Juan Capistrano
SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO (CBS Los Angeles) — An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 3.9 jolted the southern Orange County area on Monday.
The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake occurred at 10:37 a.m. Monday and was centered 1 mile west of San Juan Capistrano.
The quake — which some in Laguna Beach described as one "bang" — occurred at a depth of less than 2 miles and was felt in the central county area as a strong jolt.
Dr. Lucy Jones with the U.S. Geological Survey told KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO said the "relatively shallow" temblor was felt over a wide area.
"It's at the southern end of the Newport-Inglewood fault, so it's not at all a surprising location," said Jones.
Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Marc Stone says there have been no immediate reports of damage, while officials at Southern California Edison said the quake had no impact on the San Onofre Nuclear Generation Station.
The power-generating plant has been shut down since January for ongoing repair work.
There were no immediate reports of any damage from the quake.
John Stevens of San Clemente said that while the quake was a comparatively mild one, it was still enough to get his attention.
"The 'seat of my pants' meter, I think 3.9 is pretty accurate," said Stevens.
