Is it time for Ford to step down?

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford is under fire yet again, after court documents released Thursday showed the mayor in close contact with Alexander Lisi, recently arrested and charged with four drug offences.

According to the 500-page document, which was used to obtain a search warrant for Lisi, Ford and Lisi met a number of times and had "approximately 349 points of telephone contacts" between Aug. 7 and Sept. 19. The document also outlines police surveillance in which packages were exchanged between Lisi and Ford.

The investigation that led to Lisi's arrest began with Toronto Police looking into the existence of a cell phone containing video of Ford smoking crack, which was reported by Gawker and the Toronto Star. The video has never surfaced, and Ford has denied its existence.

Critics of the mayor and city councillors are calling for Ford step aside amid the allegations. Earlier this month, Coun. Denzil Minnan-Wong and Coun. Shelley Carroll said that the mayor needs to step aside if he is being investigated by police.

"I don't think it's in the city's best interests to have a mayor who is under police investigation" Minnan-Wong said. "That's not the type of mayor that we need."

Ford has defended Lisi in light of the recent drug charges.

"He's a friend," Ford said following Lisi's arrest. "He's a good guy and I don't throw my friends under the bus."

Defenders of Ford have done the same. Without direct evidence or a confession by the mayor, there's no reason for him step aside, they contest.
