This dad’s pancake art will amaze you

Culinarily talented Oklahoma City father Kevin Blankenship treats his boys, Mason and Dax to a virtual art show, all around the breakfast table. Blankenship transforms a simple Bisquick mix into intricate pancake masterpieces ranging from an Allosaurus to a king zombie.

KWTV News 9 spoke to the flapjack artist who said it’s a way for him to share his love of art with his two boys. “Drawing is, you know we just did simple shapes and colors and that sort of stuff. With this, they want to eat it and it’s easier to do, so we just kind of get together and do whatever we can,” said Blankenship.

The father’s art is not limited to the dining table. His creations using more traditional mediums are displayed throughout the family’s home. Back in December, Business Insider reported that Blankenship was once a newspaper cartoonist who transitioned to advertising when he started his family. With work and children leaving him with less time to draw, the pancake art was a way to combine cartooning and parenting.

The pancake Picasso draws his images in reverse using different types of squeeze bottles. “Whatever is the darkest part of the picture, I put that down first. That's usually the outline, and then I give it time to cook before I fill it in with more batter for the lighter parts. It's all about timing and patience," Blankenship explained to Business Insider.

Kevin’s Instagram, started in August 2013, was the first showcase for his griddle talents. Then this year he launched the Tumblr blog, randomBreakfasts, exclusively for his hotcake art.

Want to try your hand at your own breakfast artistry? A few more tips from Blankenship: use a little extra milk than the recipe calls for and use a mixer, rather than hand mixing, to get the batter extremely smooth. Good luck and bon appétit!
