This apartment is so disgusting that a mushroom was growing out of the wall

Matthew Schwertferger and Sarah Zeibert, a couple with a three-month-old daughter, were forced to move out of their New Lenox, Illinois apartment when they felt their landlord wasn’t doing enough to resolve a disgusting mold problem. As WFLD FOX 32 News reports, they first realized there was a problem behind their walls when they noticed a mushroom growing out from underneath a cabinet.

"It blew my mind. I had no idea why a mushroom should be growing out of someone's cabinet, at all,” Mr. Schwertferger told WFLD. “Definitely a sign, that obviously, mold issue.” When he looked behind the walls of the apartment, he found a thick black coating of mold. After complaining to the landlord, a handyman came over. Mr. Schwertferger and Ms. Zeibert claim that handyman did nothing. Worried for their child’s health, the couple decided to skip out on their lease. They hope to receive their security deposit back.

WFLD tried speaking with the landlord, but didn’t receive any calls back. The station did speak with New Lenox Police Chief Bob Sterba. “They did find some mold and other issues of code enforcement,” the police chief told the station. “We'll give [the property owner] a reasonable amount of time to fix these problems and address them in an appropriate manner." Chief Sterba mentioned this is not the first complaint they’ve received about this landlord.
