Teen turns in $2800 found at McDonald’s
Erica Clark met her parents for lunch at a McDonald’s in Moorhead, Minnesota and when they parted ways, next to her car the 19-year-old found an envelope filled with $2800 in cash. Valley News Live spoke with Erica about her huge discovery.
She said that just before she closed her car door she noticed an envelope sticking out of the snow. Erica explained, “I was just expecting it to be like mail or something. When I opened it and I looked at it, it was all hundred dollar bills and I was just shocked.” Inside the envelope were 28 crisp new $100 bills. It was the most cash the Dilworth, Minnesota teenager had seen, but she never had second thoughts about returning the money. "I couldn't believe it, I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh. I can’t believe somebody lost this much money.’ I couldn’t believe what they probably were feeling at that point," said Erica.
The good samaritan called her father and the two headed to the police department to turn in the cash. Moorhead Police Department Lieutenant Tory Jacobson said, "Well I certainly haven’t seen larger than $2,800 found and turned into the police department during my 24 years on the department,” adding “It’s a wonderful feeling to be able to take a report like this and to deal with this quality of a person.” The officers used a Wells Fargo bank slip containing a transaction number, which accompanied the cash, to determine the rightful owner.
Eventually it was found that the man who lost the money had withdrawn the $2800 to purchase a truck. When he realized it was missing he was frantic and worried that it was gone forever. So when it was returned to him, he was overjoyed and has planned to thank Erica in person for her honesty.
Erica, a college student at Minnesota State University Moorhead and a volunteer coach working beside her father for the Dilworth Glyndon Felton High School boy’s basketball team, does not expect reward money and feels like she’s already received what she wanted because the money got to the rightful owner. Erica wants people to remember, "There's still honest people in the world and that someone would turn it in, ‘cause he didn't think he would ever be seeing that money again."
