Sears franchise owner defies corporate orders, will stay closed on Thanksgiving
Power to the people. WMUR News 9 is reporting on Sears franchise owner Holly Cassiano, who in defiance of corporate orders, will be keeping her store closed on Thanksgiving.
When word came down that her Plymouth, New Hampshire based store should be open on the holiday, Holly wasn’t pleased. She told WMUR, “I grew angry, I won’t lie. I grew angry.” Ms. Cassiano continued, “We’re not going to allow corporate retailers to rule over our family values and take this away from us.”
Holly said this was something she had to do, “Even for my own employees, I value my employees enough that I wouldn’t want to have them work on a day that I believe is meant to be spent with the family.”
The store will open on Black Friday at 6AM and offer the same deals Sears has been advertising. She has sent a letter to Sears that explains her reasoning, but as of now, the company has not responded. In the meantime, the storeowner and mother is petitioning local elected officials to allow franchise owners the discretion to close their stores on holidays.
A UConn Poll, released on November 25, shows that most Americans do not favor shopping on Thanksgiving day. According to them, 9 out of 10 Americans will not be bargain shopping on the holiday, and, “49 percent disapprove compared to 16 percent who approve, while 34 percent are neutral on stores opening for business on Thanksgiving Day.”
