Guilt ridden man makes amends to restaurant 70 years after dine and dash
An elderly man in his 80s recently made a special trip to Lamb’s Grill, a restaurant in Salt Lake City, Utah, to make amends for a crime he committed over 70 years ago. As reported by KSL News, a woman entered the iconic Salt Lake City restaurant and caught server, Jasmine Back’s attention. “This woman walks in the front door, and she looks like she’s on a mission,” said Back. "She starts in and says, 'My father ... ' so my mind wanders and I think, 'What's going to happen next?' Next, she says, '(He) dined and dashed here in 1941." The woman’s father was only 10-years-old at the time and reportedly ate at the establishment with a friend. But when they realized that they couldn’t pay the bill, which totaled $1, they ran away.
According to the woman, her father has been racked with guilt ever since the day of the crime. He was actually still so embarrassed by his actions back then that, though he made the ride to Lamb’s Grill, he waited in the car while his daughter spoke to the restaurant management on his behalf.
The woman ended up handing Ms. Back a $5 bill as an apology. Francis Liong, the current owner of Lamb’s Grill, told KSL, “The five dollars don’t belong to me. It belongs to the previous owners, back then. So I need to pay it back.” Mr. Liong wanted to let the remorseful man know that all is forgiven, adding, “I’d like to tell him to please come back and eat at Lamb’s Grill — but don’t dash out.”
