Black bear ‘shops’ for his favorite foods in couple’s fridge (with video)

A young black bear nicknamed Yogi was recently caught on surveillance video selectively stealing food from a couple’s outdoor refrigerator/freezer. As reported by Global News, locals know the bear and like the cartoon character he shares a name with, Yogi is believed to regularly take food. "We know him quite well," Sandy Lewis, owner of the Powers Creek Retreat in West Kelowna, Canada, told Castnet News. "We can't be 100 percent sure it's the same one, but odds are it's him."

Over the past few weeks, Sandy and her husband Tom noticed items missing from their outdoor fridge. The two said that there was no other damage on the property, so they set up a camera to see who or what may have been leaving their refrigerator door open at night. When they examined the footage they saw a bear on its hind legs, opening the top freezer door and sifting through various frozen items. The bear passes up less desirable items like frozen vegetables and takes a pie. He was definitely shopping for a particular item,” said Tom. “He didn’t just take anything. I mean he threw the ice cream out. I can’t believe a bear would throw ice cream out.” Sandy told Global News, “Some taquitos were gone, some perogies and some cream cheese.” She added, “The humor in it is, is that some people don’t think animals are that smart. Well that’s, that proves that they are. I mean he, he or she obviously checked out the rest of the food and went, ‘No, like I’m into, I want some carbs or something.’”

"You could tell he had been in there before and the first time he opened the lid probably whacked him on the head," Ms. Lewis told Castnet News. "This time, he pushes it open and looks to make sure it doesn't hit him." The couple say that Yogi has never caused harm to people or animals and that he is quite timid around humans. They are simply sharing the video because they thought it was funny.
