Bear crashes party, skylight

Talk about a party crasher. While preparing for their son’s first birthday party, Alicia Bishop’s and Glenn Merrill were surprised when an unexpected visitor decided to join the party, namely, a black bear.

The Juneau Empire reports that the bear having shimmied its way up onto the roof of the Starr Hill home crashed through the skylight and landed right in the middle of the family’s living room. “I was literally in the room, and I heard this cracking,” Merrill said in an interview. “And the next thing you know, there’s this bear that, I mean, literally, fell right from (the skylight). It was like three feet away from me.”

Not waiting to blow out any candles, the bear immediately made his way over to the to the living room table, replete with a spread of birthday treats, and helped itself to some lemon blueberry and peanut butter cupcakes. Thankfully, invited guests of the human variety had yet to arrive at their house but were expected any minute when the party crasher dropped in.

“The bear walks over and puts its paws up on the table and starts licking his birthday cupcakes, and I’m just like, you’ve got to be kidding me,” said Bishop, 33, who was watching the spectacle from the kitchen behind closed glass doors.

Before any other guests could arrive, Bishop opened a door to the backyard and the couple “shooed” at the bear until it casually ambled out the door. “I think he was used to humans,” Merrill said, adding the bear did not act aggressively. “He was awfully calm,” Bishop added.
